😰 I Feel Out of Control

When life feels overwhelming, we’ll help you let go of what you can’t control and strengthen what you can.

😰 I Feel Out of Control
Feeling out of control doesn’t mean you are.
There are moments in life when everything feels uncertain.
Maybe you’re waiting for an answer.
Maybe someone else’s choices are affecting you.
Maybe life has changed in ways you never expected.
When that happens, your brain naturally tries to regain control.
It starts planning.
Worrying.
Replaying conversations.
Preparing for every possible outcome.
Not because you’re weak…
…but because your brain believes control equals safety.
The truth is, there are many things we can’t control.
Learning to focus on what we can control is one of the most powerful ways to calm the nervous system.

🧠 What’s Happening in Your Brain?

Your brain’s primary job is to help you survive.

When life feels uncertain, it asks:

“How can I make sure nothing bad happens?”

The problem is…

Many of life’s biggest challenges can’t be controlled.

Other people.

The future.

Unexpected events.

Time.

Health.

Loss.

Because your brain can’t control those things, it often works even harder.

It mistakes more thinking for more control.

But control and certainty are not the same thing.

Real confidence comes from trusting yourself, not controlling everything around you..

💬 Supportive Self-Dialogue

When life feels chaotic, remind yourself:

“My brain is searching for certainty, not truth.”

“I don’t need to control everything to be okay.”

“I can handle uncertainty one moment at a time.”

“My job isn’t to control life—it’s to respond to it.”

“I can choose my next step, even if I can’t see the whole path.”

“Peace comes from trusting myself, not predicting the future.”

“I have overcome uncertainty before.”

“It’s okay to let go of what was never mine to control.”

“I am stronger than this moment feels.”

🛠️ Try This Today

1. Draw Two Circles

On a piece of paper, draw two circles.

Circle 1 — Things I Can Control

Write things like:

  • My attitude
  • My choices
  • My effort
  • My words
  • My boundaries
  • My breathing
  • My next step

Circle 2 — Things I Can’t Control

Write things like:

  • Other people’s opinions
  • Their decisions
  • The past
  • Tomorrow’s outcome
  • Unexpected events
  • How quickly life changes

Every time your mind drifts into the second circle…

Bring it back to the first.

2. Ask One Simple Question

Instead of asking:

“How do I fix everything?”

Ask:

“What’s the next helpful thing I can do?”

That’s all your brain needs right now.

Not the whole plan.

Just the next step.

3. Practice Letting Go

Close your eyes.

Imagine holding a heavy backpack.

Each worry is another rock.

One by one, remove the rocks that were never yours to carry.

Notice how much lighter you feel.

Sometimes peace begins by putting down what was never your responsibility.

4. Take One Grounding Action

When everything feels out of control, choose one small action.

Maybe you’ll:

  • Make your bed.
  • Drink a glass of water.
  • Go for a five-minute walk.
  • Wash the dishes.
  • Stretch.
  • Call someone you trust.

Small actions remind your brain:

“I still have influence here.”

💡 Lightbulb Moment

Control isn’t the opposite of anxiety.

Trust is.

The more you trust your ability to respond to whatever happens…

…the less your brain needs to predict everything beforehand.

Confidence isn’t knowing nothing bad will happen.

It’s knowing you’ll find your way if it does.

🌱 Brain Rewiring Challenge

Choose one thing today that you’ve been trying to control but simply can’t.

.Maybe it’s:

  • Someone else’s feelings.
  • Someone texting back.
  • The outcome of a decision.
  • What people think about you.
  • Whether everything goes perfectly.

Now say:

“I release what isn’t mine to control.”

Then redirect your attention to one thing you can do today.

That’s where change begins.

❤️ Before You Leave

You don’t have to carry the weight of the entire future.

You don’t have to solve every unknown.

You don’t have to prevent every mistake.

Right now…

Take one breath.

Notice where you are.

Choose one next step.

That’s enough.

Life isn’t asking you to control everything.

It’s asking you to keep showing up.

🌤️ A Gentle Reminder

You don’t become stronger by controlling life.

You become stronger by learning that you can handle life, even when it’s unpredictable.

That’s where real confidence grows.

✍️ Reflection Exercise

Take a few minutes and write your answers.

  • What feels out of control right now?
  • Which parts are actually within my influence?
  • What am I trying to control that belongs to someone else?
  • What’s one small action I can take today?
  • If I trusted myself a little more, what would I do differently?

Sometimes clarity comes when we stop trying to control the entire story and simply focus on the next sentence.
